We arrived Wednesday, in time for cocktails (!), followed by dinner:
King of the Grill:
Medium rare is no problem here. He builds elevators too!! (I should have taken more photos of the food because there was a lot of it, and it was spectacular!)
Wednesday night we had heavy rain, but it cleared in the morning and we were able to enjoy the coast:
Bicolored lotus (Lotus hermosissimus) on the marine terrace at Duncan's Landing.
A rare clover nearby,
and Baby Blue Eyes (Nemophila menziesii).
Between rain showers Edna and Shirley head down to the Pleistocene rocks near Goat Rock:
Edna sees something in the distance.
They pass Pussy Ears (Calochortus tolmii) nestled along the downward trail.
Yes, that black, eye-level area, polished by mastodon shoulders for itch relief (so some say) continues to gleam!!
Then cocktails, and more food, and more rain! But Thursday we were able to enjoy clear weather for the spectacular drive (Everybody forgot his/her camera!) to Occidental and Western Hills Nursery, which is to be sold, and possibly closed forever :->
Friday we took the Bay Hill Road "shortcut" to Petaluma.
Monkeyflowers (Mimulus aurantiacus) and purple phacelia (Phacelia californica) along Bay Hill Road.
On our way home to Santa Cruz we found Pigeon Point Lighthouse historical site open to the public. One docent pointed out a "big mother" whale crusing by at about four knots. (One knot is one nautical mile or 6,080 feet per hour. It is equivalent to 1.15 miles per hour.) Another docent spent 20 minutes with us showing photos and diagrams of the Fresnel lighthouse lens. The original Pigeon Point kerosene light will be burning from 6pm to 8pm Saturday, November 12, 2005. 1,500 visitors are expected and, if it's foggy, they all must gather close to the lighthouse if they want to view the beam!
Nobody ate David's tomato plants while we were gone :-)
